Thе symbol of yin-yang іѕ uѕеd tо depict how contradictory forces are connected аnd іntеrdереndеnt іn the natural wоrld. The yin and yang concept is one that is dominant in Chinese philosophy and is shared different schools of thought.

As is observed in many Chinese philosophical concepts, the major influences of the yin-yang concept can be observed almost effortlessly, but its conceptual meanings are not as easy to define. However, despite the dissimilarities in interpretation and application of yin yang , it can be defined under three major headings: Firstly, as as the coherent fabric of nature and mind, exhibited in all existence, secondly; yin-yang can be seen as the interaction between the waxing and waning of the cosmic and human realms and lastly, yin-yang can be defined as a process of harmonization and ensuring a constant, dynamic balance of all things. As the Zhuangz claims, “ Yin in its highest form is freezing while yang in its highest form is boiling. The chilliness comes from heaven while the warmness comes from the earth. The interaction of these two forces establishes harmony; so it gives birth to things.

Currently, the earliest Chinese characters for yin and yang are claimed to be found in some inscriptions made on some skeletal remains of various animals used in ancient Chinese divination practices which date as far back as the 14th century B.C.E. In these inscriptions, yin and yang are simply used to describe natural phenomena such as weather conditions such as the movement of the sun. The presence of sunlight during the day is described as yang and the absence of sunlight at night as yin . At the time, peasants depended on sunlight for lighting and their daily life routines, so when the sun came out, they would go to the field to work, and when the sun went down, they would return home to rest. This sun based daily pattern eventually led to the conceptual claim that yang is movement and yin is rest. In some of their earliest usages, yin and yang existed independently and were not connected. The first written record of using these two characters together appears in a verse from the Shijing : “Viewing the scenery at a hill, looking for yinyang .” In this context yang is the sunny side and yin is the shady side of hill and the two happened simultaneously as the sun shone upon a hill.

Yіn and уаng, rather than opposing, describe complimentary fоrсеѕ which interact tо fоrm a continuous ѕуѕtеm wherein the entire system іѕ grеаtеr than its parts. On a broader perspective, basically evеrуthіng exists in a complimentary duality fоr instance, there would be no shadow without light. However, depending on criterion of observation, a part of the two may appear stronger but the balance must always be maintained.

The yin-yang also plays a major role in traditional Chinese medicine and conception of the human body. In one of the early Chinese medical text known as the Huangdi neijing, a detailed account of physiological functions and pathological alterations in the body and guidance for diagnosis and treatment is recorded in terms of yin-yang .
Some schools of thought depict Yin as a symbol of earth, femaleness, darkness, passivity, and absorption and it is represented by the tiger, the colour orange, and a broken line. On the other hand, yang is conceived of as heaven, maleness, light, activity, and penetration and it is represented by the dragon, the colour azure, and an unbroken line.

In harmony, the two are depicted as the light and dark halves of a circle. This symbol depicts balance and it is often said that when there is an imbalance in yin and yang, evil results. But good results from the harmonic balance of the two.
