The symbol is a geometrical figure and is made up of six or more evenly spaced, overlapping circles with a six-fold symmetry similar to that of a hexagon. However, the generic conformation of the Flower of Life symbol is a hexagonal pattern where the center of each circle on the circumference of six surrounding circles of the same diameter, made up of 19 complete circles and 36 partial circular arcs, all enclosed by a large circle.

From accessible research, it has been discovered that the flower of life is present in a large number of cultures all around the world: It is said to have been found in the Temple of Osiris in Abydos, Egypt, which are perhaps the oldest known examples of the flower of life; Recent research shows that these symbols can be no earlier than 535 B.C. and most probably date as far back as between the 2nd and 4th century AD and this is based upon photographic evidence of Greek text, which is still to be fully deciphered, seen alongside the Flower of Life circles. In Christianity, it has been linked to creation, the prophet Enoch, the Archangel Metatron, and the Vesica Pisces.
